Browns: News and notes from Day 11 of training camp

BEREA – Browns coach Rob Chudzinski said right guard Shawn Lauvao was still being evaluated by the medical staff and he’d have an update Wednesday.

Lauvao, who has started every game the last two seasons, injured his ankle Monday in the last period of practice. He was carted off the field.

Jason Pinkston replaced Lauvao at right guard with the first team. Pinkston was excused from practice early today for a personal reason.

** The Browns signed long snapper Christian Yount to a five-year contract that will run through 2017. He follows left guard John Greco as holdovers from before he new front office arrived to receive multiyear extensions.

Yount joined the Browns in 2011 for the final five games, replacing Ryan Pontbriand, and has been a steadying force.

** Chudzinski said the starters will play about a quarter Thursday night in the preseason opener vs. the Rams.

He said he’ll update the status of the injured players today. Running back Trent Richardson (shin) and strong safety T.J. Ward (hamstring) did individual drills Monday and today but didn’t participate in team drills today. That likely means they won’t play Thursday.

** Running back Montario Hardesty (hamstring tendon), receiver David Nelson (knee), tight end Brad Smelley (hamstring), offensive linemen Oniel Cousins (ankle), Ryan Miller (concussion) and Chris Faulk (knee), defensive end Dave Kruger (concussion) and fullback Brock Bolen (calf) didn’t practice.

** The practice was a dull one heavy with the scout team working as the Rams.

** Cornerback Trevin Wade had an interception and a breakup, and receiver Josh Gordon made several catches.

** Chudzinski said the punter battle between T.J. Conley and Spencer Lanning is neck-and-neck.
