NEWS OF THE DAY: Owner Jimmy Haslam watched practice and talked to the media on the first day of training camp. He said he’s “very optimistic” regarding the federal investigation of Pilot Flying J, he’s committed to owning the team for a long period and cash flow isn’t a problem.
CAMPER OF THE DAY: Safety T.J. Ward. He’s looking for a big season in his contract year and got off to a strong start. He beat tight end Jordan Cameron to the spot to force an incompletion over the middle, broke up a deep pass down the sideline to receiver Greg Little and knocked down an out to Cameron. All three throws came from Brandon Weeden.
PLAY OF THE DAY: The first handoff. The only thing special about it was that it went to running back Trent Richardson. After missing part of OTAs and the minicamp in June with a muscle strain in his shin, Richardson was ready to go for the start of camp. He took several handoffs and caught multiple passes and showed good quickness and burst. He said he’s completely healthy.
QUOTE OF THE DAY: “Half the young guys don’t even know who he is. They wouldn’t know him if he was sitting next to them. These young guys are more worried about getting to meetings on time and getting something to eat around here.” -- Linebacker D’Qwell Jackson, referring to Haslam.
SIGH OF RELIEF: Receiver Josh Gordon appeared to be injured, perhaps seriously, as he stayed down and grabbed the back of his left leg, near the Achilles. But after practice coach Rob Chudzinski said the team believed it was only a cramp.
