Browns cut S Eric Hagg, make series of roster moves

A year ago at this time, Eric Hagg was installed as the starter at free safety during offseason workouts.

On Tuesday, he was waived.

The Browns made a series of roster moves, headlined by the release of Hagg. He was a seventh-round pick in 2011 and played 10 games as a rookie, mostly on special teams. He started the first two games of 2012, had little impact and was benched. He started the final two games when injuries hit the secondary, finishing with 22 tackles and a pass defensed in 12 games.

Tashaun Gipson, undrafted out of Wyoming in 2012, has been lining up with the starters at free safety in organized team activities. He played 10 games with three starts last season, totaling 29 tackles with an interception and a pass defensed.

He could be pushed for the starting spot by Jamoris Slaughter. The sixth-round selection out of Notre Dame became Cleveland’s first draft pick to agree to a deal, signing a four-year contract. He’s recovering from a torn Achilles tendon but is expected to be ready for training camp in July.

The Browns also announced the re-signing of running back Brandon Jackson to a one-year contract. He signed a two-year, $4.5 million deal in 2011 but missed the 2011 season with a toe injury and was active for only three games last year.

Jackson is a threat catching the ball and good in pass protection, and enters the mix with Montario Hardesty, Chris Ogbonnaya and Dion Lewis behind starter Trent Richardson.

Miguel Maysonet (5-foot-10, 210 pounds) was also added to the group when he was claimed off waivers from Philadelphia. He was an undrafted rookie out of Stony Brook after rushing for 48 touchdowns and averaging 6.8 yards per carry.

Cleveland also signed receiver Michael Edwards (UTEP) and defensive back Kenronte Walker (Missouri), a pair of undrafted rookies. Edwards was signed April 30 and waived May 13 after rookie minicamp.

The Browns waived undrafted rookie running backs Jamaine Cook (Youngstown State/Midpark) and Robbie Rouse (Fresno State) and linebacker Ryan Rau.

The Browns began their second week of OTAs on Tuesday.
