Browns draft cornerback Leon McFadden in third round

BEREA – The Browns addressed a need and took San Diego State cornerback Leon McFadden with the No. 68 pick in the NFL Draft.

The Browns drafted LSU pass rusher Barkevious Mingo at No. 6, then didn’t pick again until the third round. The second-round pick was spent on receiver Josh Gordon in last year’s supplemental draft.

McFadden (5-foot-9½, 193 pounds) fills a desperate need, as the Browns are in search of a starter to pair with Joe Haden at cornerback.

The Browns chose McFadden ahead of LSU cornerback Tyrann Mathieu, Connecticut cornerback Blidi Wreh-Wilson and quarterbacks Ryan Nassib (Syracuse) and Mike Glennon (North Carolina State).

McFadden started six games as a freshman and the rest of his career, was a captain and had eight career interceptions. He was team MVP as a senior with 61 tackles, 12 pass breakups and three interceptions.

He doesn’t have ideal size or elite speed (4.54 40) but has good quickness, reactions and ball skills, according to scouting reports.
