Minicamp News and Notes: Owner Jimmy Haslam in Berea as team wraps up minicamp

BEREA – Owner Jimmy Haslam is at team headquarters for draft preparation, a team spokesman confirmed.

Haslam said Tuesday in a news conference in Knoxville, Tenn., he would keep his original schedule, despite an ongoing FBI and IRS investigation into Pilot Flying J. He is CEO of the truck-stop business founded by his father. The Pilot Flying J headquarters in Knoxville were raided Monday and four search warrants were issued.

Haslam said he planned to be in town today and Friday and much of next week. The draft begins next Thursday night, and the Browns hold the No. 6 pick.

The Browns are wrapping up a three-day minicamp today with their first outdoor practice under new coach Rob Chudzinski. Sixty-five of the 67 players practiced for the third straight day, with left guard Jason Pinkston (blood clot) and receiver David Nelson (knee) the only ones unable to go.

The wind was a bit tricky, and backup quarterbacks Jason Campbell and Thaddeus Lewis needed a couple of throws to figure it out on swing passes to the running backs.

The receivers, under assistant Scott Turner, have a new drill in which they start on their knees and work on catching low throws.

It’s going to be a busy day at Browns headquarters.

CEO Joe Banner and general manager Michael Lombardi will discuss the draft in a news conference at 2:30. And the NFL schedule will be released at 8 o’clock.
