Report: Browns, Chip Kelly close to deal

Advertisement’s Ian Rapoport reported tonight that Oregon coach Chip Kelly is close to a deal to become the Browns coach. Rapoport cited a source informed of the situation.

Kelly has been the Browns’ No. 1 choice since they fired Pat Shurmur on Monday.

Kelly coached the Ducks to a 35-17 win over Kansas State on Thursday night in the Fiesta Bowl, then met with Browns owner Jimmy Haslam and CEO Joe Banner this afternoon in Arizona.

Kelly has no NFL experience as a player or coach. He almost accepted the Tampa Bay job after the 2011 season but returned to Oregon.

“I’ve only been in one interview in my life,” Kelly said of the NFL following the Fiesta Bowl late Thursday night. “I can’t really tell you I have a checklist of what I’m looking for.

“Last year it kind of came out of the blue.  I thought it would be a good life experience, and it was.”

The Ducks fell short of a national championship this year following a regular-season loss to Stanford, but they could finish second in the season-ending polls after a 12-1 season.

Kelly, 49, is believed to be ready for the NFL following six seasons at Oregon, the final four as head coach. He went 46-7 with the Ducks, who are under investigation by the NCAA.
