(Updated) Browns QB Brandon Weeden cleared to practice after concussion, expected to start Sunday in Oakland

BEREA -- Browns quarterback Brandon Weeden has been cleared by doctors, was limited in practice this afternoon and is expected to start Sunday vs. the Raiders.

Weeden suffered a concussion Sunday in the fourth quarter of the 20-14 win over the Steelers and was removed from the game. NFL protocols require every player who sustains a concussion to be cleared by an independent neurologist before he can practice.

"It was mild," Weeden said after practice. "I never got knocked out, I was conscious the whole time. I was just a little foggy."

Weeden said it was his first concussion. He attended team meetings and participated in the walkthrough this morning. He said he felt good at practice.

“We’ll get him ready to start on Sunday,” Shurmur said. “If there are some unforeseen setbacks, then of course Colt will start. But we’re moving ahead with Brandon.”

Backup Colt McCoy, who finished the Steelers game by handing off on all six of his snaps, doesn’t normally get many repetitions in practice. Shurmur said McCoy might get one or two extra snaps this week because Weeden’s coming back from the concussion, but the focus will remain on Weeden.

“You get the starter ready to go and give him all the looks you can give him,” Shurmur said. “He’s healthy, so he goes.”

** Receiver/special teamer Joshua Cribbs didn't practice. He hurt his shoulder Sunday, briefly went to the locker room and returned to the game. He was in obvious pain after the game but said X-rays were negative.

** Safety Usama Young (concussion) isn’t ready to practice. He left the game in the third quarter.

** Cornerback Dimitri Patterson, who’s missed six games with a high ankle sprain, returned to practice for the first time.

** Special teamer Ray "Bubba" Ventrone didn't practice. He's missed the last two games with a calf injury. He said he has started running and might be able to practice Thursday.
