BEREA – The focus of training camp today was situational football, as the Browns practiced in full pads for the second straight day.
They worked on short-yardage and goal-line situations, then ended with the two-minute drill.
“I enjoy practicing the two-minute drill, it’s good for the football team,” coach Pat Shurmur said. “There’s also a lot of conditioning in that drill.”
The offense seemed to have the edge in short yardage in the middle of the field, but struggled running the ball on the goal line. Trent Richardson was stuffed once up the middle, and Brandon Jackson twice. Rookie linebacker James-Michael Johnson stood up Jackson on one of the runs to the left.
The offense scored twice on throws to the tight end – Colt McCoy to Jordan Cameron and Brandon Weeden to Benjamin Watson.
The first-team offense took on the starting defense in the two-minute drill, and Weeden couldn’t muster a first down, throwing a fourth-down pass out of bounds.
Colt McCoy succeeded with the second team, getting a 36-yard Phil Dawson field goal to win the game. McCoy hit Cameron over the middle for a first down and Josh Cooper down the sideline. Montario Hardesty, who looked good again, ran twice to set up the score.
Weeden and the starting offense got a second chance and converted. After three incompletions, including two tipped balls at the line, Weeden dumped to Richardson and the coaches were generous with the spot. Weeden then found rookie Josh Gordon on an in route and Mohamed Massaquoi on an out on fourth-and-2. A deep out to Gordon set up a 34-yard Dawson field goal.
Other notes and observations:
** Massaquoi made several nice catches, including a fingertip grab on the sideline and a low scoop over the middle with safety T.J. Ward trying for the interception.
** Hardesty quickness was obvious again, especially on a couple of runs in which he bounced outside without slowing down.
** Johnson also had two interceptions, catching the eye of Shurmur.
“He had a couple of interceptions and looked good on the goal line,” Shurmur said. “The pads tend to separate the linebackers, and he’s had a couple of good days.”
** Gordon is assimilating quickly after joining the team July 12 through the supplemental draft. He was the third wideout with the first team in the two-minute drill. He and Massaquoi lined up outside, with Greg Little in the slot.
** Defensive tackles Ahtyba Rubin and Phil Taylor, tight end Evan Moore, receiver Carlton Mitchell and fullback Eddie Williams sat out again.
** The players are off Tuesday.
