Browns QB Colt McCoy ready to compete for starting job

BEREA – Browns quarterback Colt McCoy began his competition with rookie Brandon Weeden this morning as the team began organized team activities.

McCoy took the first snaps with the starting offense, but he’s considered the underdog to keep the job. Weeden was drafted with the No. 22 pick last month.

“It is what it is. It happened and I’ve just got to go out and play,” McCoy said in his first interview since the end of the 2011 season. “I mean, just go compete.

“I’m coming out here every day working as hard as I can.”

McCoy started 13 games last season before suffering a concussion against the Steelers that cost him the final three weeks. He said he hasn’t asked to be traded.

“No, because they told me I had a chance to compete,” he said. “If it’s a fair competition, then that’s all  you can ask for.”

ESPN reported the day after the draft the Browns had told McCoy they wouldn’t take a quarterback in the first round. President Mike Holmgren and coach Pat Shurmur have adamantly denied it, while McCoy sidestepped it.

“I don’t want to get into the ‘he said, she said’ stuff,” McCoy said. “All I know is that I’m here, I’m excited to be here and we had a great first day of OTAs.”

General manager Tom Heckert said Monday night the team will play the best guy, but he “fully expects” Weeden to be that guy. McCoy said he expects to compete for that role.

“I can only go by what they tell me,” he said. “You can’t make any excuses. This is the card that’s been dealt. I can just say that I’m working as hard as I can.

“One of my favorite quotes by the Navy SEALS is, ‘The only easy day was yesterday.’ That’s just kind of how I have to live right now.”

McCoy said his relationship with Weeden is fine and he will answer whatever questions he has. McCoy said he’s trying to avoid a quarterback controversy.

“I don’t want this to be a situation where it’s me vs. him or him vs. me,” he said. “I want it to be a situation of, and I think we can all agree to this, let’s help our team the most. Let’s make it about the Cleveland Browns being a great football team next year. And if that’s the case, I’m all in.”

McCoy said he feels “really good” and hasn’t experienced any lingering symptoms from the concussion.
