Browns' Shaun Rogers fined game check, not suspended

BEREA -- The Browns got a break Tuesday afternoon, as nose tackle Shaun Rogers avoided suspension after an offseason gun arrest at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport.

The NFL announced Rogers would be fined a game check for violating the league's personal conduct policy. Rogers is due to make $6.9 million in 2010, so the fine would be more than $405,000. He's appealing the ruling.

Rogers has been on the physically unable to perform list since training camp opened and hasn't practiced. He's still recovering from a broken ankle suffered late last season. It's unknown whether he'll be cleared to play in the regular-season opener.

Defensive end Robaire Smith is awaiting a ruling from the league on a separate gun charge at an airport in Michigan. He said Tuesday morning he hadn't heard from the league.

He was hopeful he would avoid a suspension, but said it wasn't wise to assume he would just because Rogers did.
