AVON — While midseason conference dual meets usually don’t have a lot riding on the results, occasionally you get an individual matchup that could be a preview of a high-stakes showdown.

That appeared to be the case when seniors Jacob Dunstan of North Ridgeville and Zak Anderson of Midview met for a 126-pound match that felt like it could end up being a go-to-state battle in a few weeks.

The lead went back and forth before Dunstan finally scored a go-ahead takedown and held on for a 7-5 victory.

“That’s a really tough kid and you don’t have those types of matches every day, so it was good to have,” Dunstan said. “Obviously that’s a very important match. I’m just trying to get my head right for all these upcoming matches. It’s definitely tiring, that’s for sure. But, yeah, it’s a fun match. The nerves just build up and you don’t know what’s going to happen.”

The pair could meet again in the Southwestern Conference tournament, and potentially could add to their rivalry series at the Division I dual team regional and individual sectional, district and state tournaments.

“That’s when you get to kind of know each other and know what each other is doing, and that’s when the matches get even closer,” Dunstan said. “It was already a close match. I have to just keep working. I know what he does, he knows what I do now … so I just have to keep strong with what I’m doing.”

On the other mat, Avon was making short work of Westlake. The Eagles also dominated the Rangers to go 2-0 on the night and keep within one match of Berea-Midpark for the league lead.

“Coming off the loss to Berea-Midpark (a week ago), we were upset about that,” Avon senior Aaron Endrizal said. “We felt like we didn’t wrestle to our capability, so we wanted to come in here and get it done.”

Endrizal finished with a pair of wins, including a tight 4-2 decision over Westlake’s Fares Zayed in the opener.

“I respect him a lot. He’s a great wrestler and I wrestled him last year,” Endrizal said. “Beating a kid twice is always hard, and going into the conference tournament there is definitely a mental edge for me now.

“At this point I’ve wrestled a lot of SWC wrestlers. We see them at different tournaments, we see them at duals, so over the years you wrestle the kids over and over again. So, yeah, at some point it does get obsessive. But respect and competition breeds excellence.”

Another high-profile matchup during the Midview-North Ridgeville dual meet came at 145 pounds, where Middies junior Andrew Philion came away with a 5-3 win over 2017 district qualifier Jared Viancourt.

“Those matches are always great because they get me ready for the postseason,” Philion said. “The long, tough ones get my conditioning up so I’m ready to go longer and longer in each match.”

It was also the second of four straight match victories — and six of seven — as Midview pulled away from North Ridgeville.

“It’s awesome providing momentum for my team,” Philion said. “We’ve had our ups and downs this year, but we’re improving as a team. We have some first-year wrestlers, but I think we’re going good.”
