Powers Elementary Address: 401 Washington Street Amherst, Ohio 44001 Grades: 2nd and 3rd Number of Teachers: 24 Classroom Teachers, 9 Art, Music, PE and Special Ed Teachers Principal: Paula Roth Secretaries: Mrs. Kamoutsis, Mrs. Dietlin The 2003-2004 school year marks a new beginning for Powers Elementary School. The building has housed grades K-12, however, with the district restructuring, grades two and three now comprise the building. We have joined staffs from two buildings to focus on a building a strong reading and math foundation in the primary grades. This will be evident through a number of activities and events that have been planned throughout the year. Students will be creating stories to be shared with younger children and there will be a visit and presentation from a well-known author. Our goal is to expand the reading experiences of all children to include many different kinds of genres. There has also been a district commitment to maintaining high standards through the use of CORE curriculum tutors that support instruction. The staff itself has a Literacy Group that meets after school hours to discuss ways to better meet the challenge of reading instruction. Students are enticed each day to "READ, READ, READ" to find out more about the world around them. Future authors and illustrators are our expectations for the students who attend Powers Elementary.
