Lorain

    The Charles Berry Bridge

The Erie Avenue Bridge is located in Lorain. It was built in the 1930’s. In its time it was the largest bascule bridge in the world. It was open to traffic in the 1940’s connecting the two sides of Lorain. In 1988, the bridge was renamed Charles Berry Bridge in honor of a marine from Lorain County. He died in battle and was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor. This important bridge is still used today.

    Vermilion Lighthouse

The Vermilion Lighthouse, a piece of local history, is significant to my community. It assists boaters while navigating on Lake Erie and brings tourists to our area. The history of the lighthouse goes back to the 1800’s. The current lighthouse is a replica of the original one which has been moved to Lake Ontario at the entrance to the St. Lawrence Seaway. A large anchor and a ship propeller are also located on the property.

    St. Mary’s Church

I took a picture of St. Mary’s Church in Lorain. This church is historical in the community because it was the first Catholic church built in Lorain. It was built in 1873. The church burned down in 1887 and was rebuilt in the same year. Then, in 1924, the church was hit by a tornado. Once again it was rebuilt. In the basement of the church there are still bricks from the previous church.
