LaGrange

  Veterans Monument

LaGrange was established in 1827. At the elections in 1901, the citizens of the township voted to purchase a veterans monument in memory of the soldiers who fought in the Civil War. They placed it in the circular park in the center of the Village Square. Initially, the soldier faced north, but many people said that “a good soldier never turned his back on his enemy” so the soldier was turned around to face the south.

  Jackson Cemetery, 1837

One of the most prominent single-family burial grounds stands in remembrance of the Jackson family’s aid in the founding of LaGrange. The plot dates back to 1837, but the occasional offerings left on the gravesites remind us that the deceased are not forgotten. Even as civilization creeps closer and closer, the colors of autumn christen the graveyard with a distinct beauty. It is located on Webster Road.

  The Rock

Keystone High School has had one tradition for more than thirty years. That is paint “The Rock”. “The Rock” has been with Keystone High Since 1976 since then it has been a tradition to paint it the school colors and design it in any way to show school spirit. Not too long ago it was taken away for a fundraiser to raise money for a cause. The rock was located at the old high school but then relocated at the new Keystone High, and since then students have shown their school spirit and will continue to do so for many years to come.

  Railroad Tracks

“This railroad was built in La Grange Township in 1850. When President Abraham Lincoln was assassinated on April 14, 1865, his wish was to be buried in his home state of Illinois. So his funeral train left D.C. on April 21st and headed west. The train arrived in Cleveland Ohio on April 28th at 7 a.m. for a public viewing. From there, it headed south towards Columbus. It passed through LaGrange at 1:37 a.m. “

  Statue of General Sherman

The picture taken in LaGrange Township square is a statue that depicts General Sherman. General Sherman was a general for the North during the Civil War. You cannot tell from the picture, but the statue is facing the south because he wouldn’t turn his back on the enemy, especially during his war strategy of destroying everything he could in the South during the war.
