The Washington Building
The Washington building located on Middle Ave and 6th Street was constructed in 1894. It was the first chartered high school west of the Allegheny Mountains. The historical significance of this building of academia is that even after the new high school is built, the Washington building will stand as a monument to the history of Elyria High School, the students and the community it has served for over 100 years. Elyria City Hall
Elyria’s City Hall, which faces Ely Square, located on Court Street was built in 1867. It is the oldest non-residential building in Elyria and is the oldest city hall in the state of Ohio still standing on its original foundation. Some of the City Hall’s past uses were an opera house on the 2nd floor and a volunteer fire department on the first floor. Today it houses the mayor’s office and other city departments. Fountain at Elyria Square

The Black River
This photograph of the Black River was taken from the bridge on 3rd Street in Elyria. The Black River is 12 miles long. In Cascade Park, the East and West Branches of the Black River unite and end in Lorain emptying into Lake Erie. The East Brance Begins in Medina County and the West Branch begins in Ashland County. Native Americans called the Black River the Canesadooharie. In the past, factories were located near the Black River. Elyria used to pump its water from the Black River. The Veterans' Memorial
The Veterans’ Memorial located in Ely Square in Elyria was dedicated on September 2, 2006. Fundraising was done by the Elyria Veterans’ Memorial Committee and the American Legion. Until now, Elyria was the only county seat in Ohio not to have this kind of memorial. The memorial commemorates each conflict from the Revolutionary War to now including the War on Terror. The Civil War Memorial
The civil war monument is located in Elyria Square in downtown Elyria. It was built in 1888 to honor Elyrians who fought in the Civil War. The Hickories
The Hickories is located at 508 Washington Ave., Elyria. This house serves as a museum and the headquarters of the Lorain County Historical Society. Once it was the home of Arthur L. Garford who was born in 1859. He invented the padded bicycle seat, named Garford’s Saddle which was the first in the world.
