My front porch
The picture that I took is of my front porch in Amherst. I think that a front porch represents history because it gathered and gathers friends and family to come visit. Many people sit on their front porches watching the world go by, watching the seasons change, and watching the neighborhood kids grow up. A front porch will always be history because it’s a place where memories have been collected, and many more to come. Kayla Duffin 12th grade Firelands High School |

Hot Dog Heaven
In the hearts and stomachs of most Amherst residents young and old is Hotdog Heaven. It opened 29 years ago in a 19th century home in the town of Amherst. It is known for their yummy beef hotdogs. In 2005 they won an award for best hotdog of the year. Generations of families can enjoy delicious food and fun memories. Leigha Radcliffe Grade 7 St. Joseph School |

Ye Olde Spring
Ye Olde Spring, which is located behind Town Hall, is a big part of the city of Amherst’s history. A spring is a spot where an underground stream flows out on top of the land. Josiah Harris discovered the spring and for many years it was used as a free water source for Amherst residents. (Now the spring is not safe to drink out of.) Jacob Shupe
Jacob Shupe was born in Pennsylvania in 1811. He was known as the first white man to settle in Amherst, OH. When he arrived, he built a cabin over Beaver Creek, along with a sawmill and a grist mill. They helped others settle in Amherst. Sadly, when he was working on his mills, some lumber fell from a mill and crushed him. A school in Amherst is named after him. Amherst Town Hall
The Amherst, Ohio Town Hall has been used for many different things, one being a theater. The theater was in the upstairs part of Town Hall. It was used for high school plays, graduations, and concerts. Traveling groups of entertainers also performed there. Town Hall was also used for a police station. Upstairs was used for target practice. One of the most important things that this building was and still is used for is to hold town meetings. The sandstone Town Hall is still used today for many purposes. Megan Fulper 7th grade St. Joseph School |
