  Gravesite of Marshall Merriam

This photograph depicts the gravesite of Marshall Merriam. Merriam was a Revolutionary War Veteran. He fought in the first battle of the war, The Battle of Bunker Hill. He died December 6, 1839 at the age of ninety years, five months, and thirteen days, which was exceptionally old for this period of time. He is buried in River Road Cemetery in LaGrange.

Railroad Tracks

“This railroad was built in La Grange Township in 1850. When President Abraham Lincoln was assassinated on April 14, 1865, his wish was to be buried in his home state of Illinois. So his funeral train left D.C. on April 21st and headed west. The train arrived in Cleveland Ohio on April 28th at 7 a.m. for a public viewing. From there, it headed south towards Columbus. It passed through LaGrange at 1:37 a.m. “

Sandstone Quarries

If you were wondering where this picture was taken; it’s the beautiful sandstone quarries. There are several different sights you can see and some of them are in my community, South Amherst. The whole world gets their sandstone from this one place in Ohio. What is so historical about it is that it has been around since the beginning of time. John Baldwin purchased and paid just the quarries in 1828 $600.
That’s the significance of my picture.
