WELLINGTON — The Salvation Army Wellington Service Unit is looking for children to sign up for a free week of camp and free school clothes.
For years the Salvation Army has offered children to take advantage of a week of camp July 12 to 17 at Camp NEOSA at Leesville Lake in Carrollton County. Children will get to swim, hike, participate in arts and crafts, boat and fish. The camp also will teach children about connecting to God and building friendships.
Joyce Scott, human service worker at the Wellington unit, said she has had few children apply. It is open to all children in Lorain County.
“I used to find it easy to find 20 kids to go, but now I struggle to fill the spots,” she said.
In addition to the camp, those who sign up will receive clothes and school supplies. In collaboration with local churches and Love INC of Lorain County, a social service organization, children will receive two outfits. The outfits include two shirts, two pants, two pairs of underwear and three pairs of socks. Scott said she also adds backpacks and school supplies from her own funds, and shoes in collaboration with the Wellington Boys and Girls Club.
The clothing will be for any child in school. The camp is available only for children ages 6 to 12. Scott said the camp is 45 minutes from the nearest hospital — something for those with medical issues to be aware of.
To sign up, visit the Salvation Army Wellington Service Unit at 181 E. Herrick Ave. The unit is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesdays and Fridays or call (440) 647-7600. For more information about Camp NEOSA, visit www.campneosa.org.
