ELYRIA — No one was hurt when a tree fell on a pavilion in Lorain County Metro Parks Elywood Park, destroying a picnic pavilion and shelter that had been replaced only a month ago.

Elyria resident Kevin Ziegman, who was riding his bike Cascade Park on Tuesday morning, said the tree “really put a ‘V’ in that pavilion.”

Elywood Park, which adjoins Cascade Park, is accessible off Washington Avenue.

Lorain County Metro Parks Director James Ziemnik said the pavilion had been repaired a month ago with new posts, lumber and a new roof.

“And then this happens,” he said Tuesday.

Insurance is likely to cover the damage, and the pavilion will be rebuilt, Ziemnik said.

A park patron who had reserved that shelter for Memorial Day was “very understanding” about the situation, and park employees were able to find her another location in Cascade Park that she could use during the busy weekend, Ziemnik said.

He said park employees monitor trees throughout their parks for damage, disease and age to make sure they aren’t a danger to park visitors.

“Fortunately it happened late, no one was injured, we contacted insurance and will get it assessed and replaced,” Ziemnik said.
