LORAIN — Former state Rep. Dan Ramos, D-Lorain, officially announced plans to seek appointment as mayor of the city.

In the wake of Mayor Chase Ritenauer’s resignation, effective May 31, Ramos will look to fill his unexpired term through the end of this year and the Democratic spot on the November ballot.

“It was the honor of my life to serve our community in the Ohio House, and I would relish the opportunity to continue that service as Lorain’s next mayor,” Ramos said in a news release. “Lorain is headed in the right direction, but there is still more work to be done. We must build on the past, while acknowledging the challenges of today, in order to find a brighter future for everyone in Lorain. A prosperous Lorain has to be one that works for everyone.”

Ramos served as representative of the Ohio House’s 56th District, which includes all of Lorain, from 2011-18. He was unable to run again due to term limits. He is a Lorain native and a graduate of Admiral King High School and Ohio State University.

The Lorain City Democratic Central Committee is tasked with appointing Ritenauer’s successor. The 41-seat Central Committee will take two votes: one to appoint someone to Ritenauer’s unexpired term and another to fill the Democratic slot on the November ballot, though city party chairman Paul Adams said it normally is the same person for both positions.

Ramos, along with Council members Mitch Fallis, Mary Springowski, recently elected Council-at-large Tony Dimacchia and city Auditor Karen Shawver are vying for the seat. The committee has between five and 45 days after the vacancy occurs to make its appointment.

The committee is scheduled to meet 4 p.m. June 9 at the Lorain Palace Theater, 617 Broadway to make its decision.
