ELYRIA — Lorain County is having its own “Game of Thrones” among restaurants with the second annual King of Wings battle.
Nine restaurants have until June 2 to gain the most votes to win the title of King of Wings and receive a crown. The time frame was extended by a week this year after people said there were too many choices and too little time to visit them all.
Restaurants will feature their best or most creative wings for $7 per pound during the restaurant business hours. Visit Lorain County Director Jennifer Kennedy gave a presentation on the event to the county commissioners Wednesday.
The participating restaurants are 83 and Chestnut Pub and Eatery in North Ridgeville, Brickyard Bar and Grill of Oberlin, Bootleggers of Columbia Station, Foundry Kitchen and Bar of Elyria, Fort’s Tavern of Wellington, The Depot of LaGrange, Mutt and Jeff’s Restaurant and Bar of Lorain, Red Iron Bar and Grille of Wellington and Your Pit BBQ of Vermilion. Restaurants can have more than one type of wings in the contest.
Red Iron Bar and Grille, the reigning champion from the first competition, is returning to defend its title with two new selections, “Magic Red Wings” and “Dirkys BBQ Wings.”
Kennedy said the competition has proven to create more sales for the winner.
“Before the competition, they were buying 3 to 5 pounds of wings a week and now they’re going through 20,” she said.
Participants can visit each restaurant and buy a pound of the competition wings, dine-in only. Participants will get a stamp for each order of competition wings and once they find their favorite wings, they can cast a single vote.
Ballots must be submitted by June 7 at the Lorain County Visitors Center at 8025 Leavitt Road in Amherst either in person or through mail, or emailed to visitors@vistlorain county.com.
The first 300 participants will get a King of Wings T-shirt after visiting two or more restaurants. T-shirts are first-come, first-serve, and sizes aren’t guaranteed.
This year, the competition also will select a participant who visited at least four or more restaurants to win no more than a pound of wings each month from participating restaurants for a year by way of a drawing.
Participants can pick up a ballot at the Visit Lorain County website at or at participating restaurants.
In addition to King of Wings, Visit Lorain County also is hosting an ice cream competition during the summer.
Here’s the Scoop: Ice Cream Trail features 11 participating ice cream shops and stands in Lorain County from May 24 to Sept. 2.
Participants can buy a passport at Visit Lorain County’s Visitors Center, Divine Scoops, Hot Dog Heaven, Krieg’s Strawberry Farm and Market, or Sundae Funday’s during regular business hours with a lanyard for $1.
The passport gives a 25-cent discount on the first purchase of ice cream and customers get their passports stamped at the participating locations. Participants who bought a lanyard last year can reuse it this year with a new passport.
A completed passport can be exchanged for an enamel pin and can be entered for a chance to win free ice cream for a year.
