ELYRIA — The reason why a furnace vessel failed, causing an April 8 fire at the Elyria Foundry, remains unknown, according to the Elyria Fire Department.
Fire Chief Carl Mack told City Council on Monday that the department’s Fire Prevention Bureau is working with Foundry officials to determine the cause of the blaze.
Damages from this month’s fire were estimated at $150,000 to $200,000. Mack said Foundry officials told the department they are unsure why a furnace vessel failed for the second time in four months.
A similar fire Jan. 22 at the plant on Filbert Street was contained by firefighters after it got into the roof, but the plant was back in production later that morning.
