ELYRIA — Equipment will start moving earth soon for the new Hamilton Elementary School, the Elyria Board of Education learned Wednesday.
Board member Jim Backs, board liaison to the construction process, said workers will start digging “within the month.”
The new Hamilton School will be on a block bordered by 12th and 13th streets, West and Middle avenues and will open in fall 2020, the school district said previously. Designs for the building were unveiled by the board in mid-February.
The 58,000-square-foot building, for students in preschool through eighth grade, is named for Alexander Hamilton, the founding father and first U.S. Secretary of the Treasury. Elyria previously had a Hamilton School until it closed in 1979.
The Northwood Campus school and Ely Elementary also are slated to open in fall 2020. Backs said he toured the Northwood site, on North Abbe Road, and the structure that can seen emerging at the site is the kindergarten-through-eighth-grade campus’s gymnasium.
Twenty-five brick masons are working on the site, as well as a number of other workers doing electrical and conduit work underground, Backs said. The outer shell of a gymnasium should be very apparent in a week to 10 days, he said.
Concrete floors will then be poured in the next three weeks, weather-permitting, and the building should remain on schedule “if the weather holds,” Backs said.
A ring road around the Northwood campus also will be built in the near future to accommodate parking for more workers. Up to 100 people should be working on the site by early summer, Backs said.
The Northwood campus is being built atop the former site of Pioneer Field and the Spring Valley school.
The board on Wednesday also approved the 2019-20 school calendar.
The first day of school this year is Aug. 28, a Wednesday. Students and staff will get their first day off the following Monday, Sept. 2, for Labor Day.
There will be no school Oct. 11 (North Eastern Ohio Education Association Day); Nov. 1, 5 and 27; Jan. 17; March 20; and April 6, 2020, for teacher professional development, inservice/records days and conference make-up days.
Winter break begins Dec. 23, 2019, and ends Jan. 2, 2020. Spring break is April 7-13, 2020, and the 2020 school year ends June 3, according to the calendar approved at Wednesday’s meeting.
Superintendent Ann Schloss said graduation dates for 2020 are not yet listed on the calendar because facilities have not been secured yet. The calendar will be updated when they are, she said.
