ELYRIA — Five retired cruisers from the Elyria Police Department may find a new home after a discussion at the City Council Finance Committee meeting Monday evening.

Elyria Police Chief Duane Whitely said the department plans to remove five Ford Crown Victoria model cruisers, which are deemed “unfit for use.” The cruisers still were operational but were just old, Whitely said.

“You can drive them, but our head of the central maintenance garage said we’re not putting any more money into these cars, it’s just not worth it,” he said.

The decision of what to do with the vehicles will be determined at the next Council meeting Monday. If approved, four cruisers could be sent to the mechanic class for Lorain County Joint Vocational School and one sent to the South Amherst Police Department.

The police department received new Ford Explorers a few months ago, which are currently being prepared for service in the near future.
