ELYRIA — Lorain County will host its own Mardi Gras celebration next month.

Visit Lorain County Interim Director Jennifer Kennedy outlined the planned weeklong celebration during the county commissioners meeting Wednesday.

The event will be similar to the county’s burger battle and restaurant week, in which participants take a card around to various locations and get a stamp.

The event will run from March 1 through 9 and will feature local specials from participating restaurants, bars and bakeries. Select bed-and-breakfasts will offer special packages for overnight stays. Other area businesses and shops will have their own sales or specials, while also showcasing their best window displays for a competition.

Passports will be available from any of the participating locations.

On March 9, there will be a special concert at the Stocker Arts Center’s Hoke Theatre on the campus of Lorain County Community College. The show will feature Teerance Simien and the Zydeco Experience. Simien is a two-time Grammy award-winning artist whose music has been featured in TV commercials and in more than a dozen films, according to Visit Lorain County.

Participants can win a free ticket to the concert by receiving two stamps from each category on the passport. Attending the show and completing 60 percent of the passport will make participants eligible to enter for a chance to win a “taste of New Orleans” gift basket.

Tickets for the 7 p.m. show also are available for $5.

There will also be a New Orleans food showcase at LCCC featuring dishes like jambalaya, gumbo, shrimp and more right before the concert for $15 a person. The VIP ticket also includes concert admission.

The weeklong celebration is sponsored by the Lorain County commissioners, Visit Lorain County and Lorain County Community College.

“Mardi Gras is always a great time,” Commissioner Matt Lundy said. “If you can’t make it to New Orleans, we’re going to be the next best place to celebrate. Even better, our Mardi Gras is a family-friendly event. It’s just going to be an absolutely great time for everyone.”
