ELYRIA — A candidates night will be 6 p.m. tonight for those hoping to be appointed to the vacant seat on the Lorain County Board of Commissioners.
The Elyria Democratic Party and the Lorain Democratic Party will host the event at the Courtyard by Marriott in Elyria, 1755 Travelers Lane. The event is open to the public and is expected to last about two hours.
Lorain County Democratic Party Chairman Anthony Giardini said the event is not a mandatory meeting — candidates and Democratic Party Central Committees members do not have to be in attendance. No voting will take place at the meeting.
Prepared questions and questions submitted by those attending will be addressed. The forum is an opportunity for the community to listen to the candidates’ views, opinions and plans, in a constructive and structured format, according to a release from the Democratic Party.
The Central Committee will fill the vacancy left by former commissioner Ted Kalo at 5 p.m. Sunday at the Bricklayers New Union Hall at the intersection of state routes 58 and 113 in Amherst Township.
Giardini said that seven people are seeking the appointment.
Elyria Safety Service Director Mary Siwierka, former Sheffield Lake Mayor John Piskura, Oberlin City Councilman Ronnie Rimbert, Lorain City Council President Joel Arredondo, former state Senate candidate Sharon Sweda, Niki Smiley Wilson and former Lorain County Domestic Relations Court Administrator Doug Messer have announced they are seeking the appointment.
Kalo resigned last month after he was appointed Lorain Clerk of Courts by members of the Democratic Party’s Central Committee. Kalo had expressed interest in running for the position this year, and sought to replace Lori Maiorana after she resigned as clerk of courts.
Maiorana announced her resignation, effective Jan. 1, in December, citing health reasons, but Lorain police confirmed her office was under investigation at the time of her resignation.
Kalo’s term as commissioner expires in 2020.
