The company that owns Pat Catan’s Arts and Craft Stores announced Wednesday it would be closing all 36 locations, including two in Lorain County.
In a news release, The Michaels Co. said it would close the Pat Catan’s stores in Ohio and surrounding states. The company said it intends to rebrand up to 12 of the closed Pat Catan’s stores and reopen them as Michaels.
In 2016, Michaels purchased Lamrite West, which was a privately held company that with a wholesale division, a small sourcing office in China and the Pat Catan’s stores that “were operated as outlets for the wholesale business,” according to the release.
“Over the last three years, we have delivered value through the significant expansion of our China-based sourcing team and the growth of our wholesale business,” the Michaels statement said. “However, the Pat Catan’s retail business has struggled in the face of industry headwinds.”
There are two Pat Catan’s stores in Lorain County — one on Center Ridge Road in North Ridgeville and another on Cooper Foster Park Road in Amherst.
Employees at the Pat Catan’s store in North Ridgeville said they were not allowed to discuss the announcement of the impending store closures and directed requests for comments to the public relations department at Michaels.
Calls to Michaels requesting comments were not returned.
The company did not provide information about which stores might be rebranded from Pat Catan’s to Michaels. It also didn’t say how many employees would lose their jobs due to the closures.
