Cookies are prepared for distribution last year.

Whether your favorite Girl Scout cookie is a Thin Mint or a Samoa, the Girl Scouts invite you to Tagalong this year as cookie sales begin today.

People can begin placing presale orders with their local Girl Scout troops today. March will bring the arrival of the cookies as well as cookie booths in the community.

Girl Scout Cookie sales began more than 100 years ago as a way to teach girls business skills and how to handle money as well as to encourage self-esteem and confidence.

In 2018, Thin Mints were the top cookie sold, followed by Samoas and Tagalongs. According to Kim Graves, director of marketing for the Girl Scouts of North East Ohio, nearly 2.9 million boxes of cookies were sold last year.

More than 18,000 girls participated in cookie sales in 2018 and 59 Girl Scouts managed to sell more than 1,000 boxes.

“One hundred percent of the net revenue stays local,” said Graves in regards to where the money from cookie sales goes. “The things that the girls decide to do with the money can be fun things like taking a trip to another state or even across the ocean. They are doing community service projects … the list go on and on. A lot of girls use their cookie earnings to support their Gold Award project. There is no limit to what they can accomplish by participating in the Girl Scout cookie program.”

Although cookie sales don’t start until January each year, troops start planning for the season far in advance.

“In the fall, the troops get together and they talk about the upcoming cookie program,” Graves said.

Troop members discuss activities they wish to have in the upcoming year and they set a budget which helps them set goals for the cookie season.

Girl Scout Cookies are $5 per box and there will be eight varieties offered this year including Thin Mints, Tagalongs, Samoas, Do-Si-Dos, Trefoils, Savannah Smiles, Toffee-tastic, and Girl Scout S’mores.

Preorders begin today and the season ends March 24.
