ELYRIA — The city is accepting bagged leaves and finishing its pickup program this month.
Safety Service Director Mary Siwierka told City Council on Monday that brown paper leaf bags are available from the city for residents looking to bag their own leaves.
Leaf and yard waste can be taken to the Elyria Regional Compost Facility at 45 Chestnut St., and free brown paper leaf bags are available at Elyria City Hall, 131 Court St., or the Central Maintenance Garage at 851 Garden St.
Leaves in any other container, such as plastic trash bags, will not be accepted and will have to be dumped at the Compost Facility. Questions may be directed to (800) 421-8722 or (440) 322-3895.
Nine city crews are working daily to vacuum up all the leaf piles they can, and every Vactor vacuum truck the city has “is up and running” to assist, Siwierka said.
Councilman Mark Jessie, D-3rd Ward, expressed admiration for those out raking Monday.
“The leaves are so heavy when wet,” he said. “What a job that is.”
