Gas service restored to 1,276 Elyria customers, work continues tonight with pink zone (UPDATED)

Update: As of 6 p.m., the county emergency management agency announced that service has been restored to 1,276 customers. The announcement said that number will continue to increase through the night as the agency’s crew of more than 100 technicians work to restore service to the rest of the customers.

The agency finished every customer who answered the door in the blue and yellow zones, according to the announcement, and will continue to relighting services to homes in the pink zone. For those who weren’t home, the agency will try to restore service again, but didn’t give a specific time when.

The agency asks those who are without service in the pink zone to stay home to wait for crews to come. If residents have to leave, the agency suggests they leave their contact information on their door or leave it with their neighbors and leave the porch light on so the crews will know the service is off.

Update: As of noon, the county emergency management agency announced that service has been restored to 1,111 customers with more expected later in the day.

ELYRIA — The county emergency management agency reports that Columbia Gas employees are continuing to relight gas service in the blue and yellow zones and will begin relighting service to households in the pink zone this afternoon (see map).

The outage was a deliberate shutdown Thursday afternoon for safety reasons, that affected 2,500 households in Elyria’s Eastern Heights neighborhood, according to Columbia Gas. As of this morning, approximately 2,000 homes and businesses remain without gas service.

Technicians, along with employees from other regional gas companies, have been working to purge lines, inspect the work and relight gas service. 

Gas workers will make three attempts to restore service to homes in the affected areas. If residents cannot be reached, customers must call Columbia Gas to have service restored. Information will be left at the unoccupied houses. Customers should leave their porch light on if they still need service restored. They can also let crews working that they see outside know they are home.

Crews will need to enter each home and business to perform a safety inspection and relight gas service. All Columbia Gas employees carry a valid photo ID.
