Man, dog safe but homeless after Elyria apartment fire

A man and his dog are currently homeless after an early-morning apartment fire in Elyria.

Firefighters were called to 221 Mockingbird Lane shortly before 3 a.m. today for a fire at Chestnut Acres apartments. One of the eight units was ablaze from a fire that is believed to have started in the kitchen, said Assistant Fire Chief Carl Mack.

The apartment resident, identified by Mack as John Wooten, jumped out the window to escape serious injury. His dog also escaped. Arrangements are being made with the local Red Cross to house them, Mack said, because the apartment is uninhabitable.

The fire did not damage any other units in the apartment, Mack said. The damage estimate was $7,000 for the apartment, and $3,000 for its contents. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
