Avon mayor orders flags to half-staff for Cleveland police officer who died

Flags in Avon will fly at half-staff in memory of Cleveland police officer Vu Nguyen, an Avon resident.

A news release from Mayor Bryan Jensen and police Chief Richard Bosley announced flags will fly at half-staff from sunrise Wednesday to sunrise Friday. The release also asks business owners in Avon who fly flags to do the same.

Nguyen collapsed July 2, a day when the high temperature was 93 degrees in Cleveland, during a timed 1.5-mile run during a fitness test for officers seeking to become K9 handlers, and died Friday.

The head of the Cleveland Police Patrolmen's Association said Nguyen had no known pre-existing medical conditions.

Nguyen became a police officer in 1998 after four years as a guard in the city's jail.

He's survived by his wife and two children.
