ELYRIA — County commissioners hired a consulting firm to study the corridor along U.S. Route 6 in Vermilion.

The county will pay $35,000 to MS Consultants for a study that will allow the county and the city to work on the Transportation and Livable Communities Initiative from the Northeast Ohio Areawide Coordinating Agency.

“We look forward to continuing to improve our lakefront and improve our opportunity to create jobs and investments not only along the lakefront but throughout the entire county,” Lorain County Community Development Director Don Romancak said.

Vermilion Mayor Jim Forthofer said he’s been looking forward to getting this project started.

“The sort of help we usually have for something like this is reassuring,” he said. “It’s the type of project that perfectly fits Vermilion. Vermilion has a reputation as a tourist town that’s a corridor to the islands. This fits perfectly.”

In other business, the commissioners said goodbye to Keith Bailey, the director of the Lorain County Solid Waste Management District who is retiring after eight years.

He implemented the county’s first solid waste management plan as well as automated recycling in most places in Lorain County.

“Keith was also instrumental in finding new funding for the city of Oberlin to provide natural gas and diesel trucks,” Commissioner Ted Kalo said. “Keith has always been a trusting and dependable worker and all of his untiring efforts will be remembered by his fellow workers.”

Bailey, who has been working in the solid waste industry since 1981, said he knows the county gets caught up in a lot of things, but he appreciated the work the commissioners do.

“You’re responsible for the safe and sanitary disposal of solid waste, and you have a lot of tools in your toolbox,” he said. “You utilized the Health Department and the Sheriff’s Office. You are the responsible party, and you’ve always had that in the back of your mind.”
