AVON — Avon Brewing Company got ugly on Saturday night — for a good cause — at its Ugly Christmas Sweater Party, which kicked off its food drive to benefit the Salvation Army of Elyria and Friendship Animal Protective League.

“I love that Avon Brewing Company chooses to highlight charities in a fun way,” said Greg Willey, executive director of Friendship APL. “The company not only raises money for the organizations they support but awareness for their missions as well.”

Avon Brewing Company, 37040 Detroit Road, hosts a monthly charity event. Co-owner Mathias Hauck said they like to link fun times with a social purpose.

The Salvation Army of Elyria and Friendship APL were chosen for the last charity event of the year because of Hauck’s connection with them.

By day, he is a career-based intervention instructor through the Lorain County Joint Vocational School at Midview High School in Grafton. Hauck said he and his students focus on the Salvation Army and Friendship APL for community service because the two organizations do so much in the community.

“The Salvation Army offers so much to the community, whether it is the food bank, social services or children and youth programming,” Hauck said. “We just wanted to support them for that.”

The brewery has a strong relationship with Friendship APL. It was the first organization that had a fundraiser with Avon Brewery.

“With that great opportunity we formed a connection,” Hauck said, “and have had them here several times.”

Avon Brewing Company will collect nonperishable food for people and pets until Dec. 28.
