CAMDEN TWP. — A woman and a pet turtle were spared injury when a fire destroyed their home Wednesday on state Route 303.
Firefighters battled the house fire for several hours in near whiteout conditions as a snowstorm blew through the area.
Camden Township and Oberlin fire departments were called to the home shortly before 1 p.m. Resident Krystal Underwood said she had a fire burning in the house’s fireplace when the space between the fireplace and wall caught fire.
Underwood was the only person home at the time; her 12-year-old son was at school. Underwood said firefighters were able to retrieve the turtle safely for her.
Route 303 between Quarry Road in Pittsfield Township and Rowell Road in Camden Township was closed while the fire departments worked.
Underwood sat in a truck outside her home with a small container of water next to her holding the turtle.
“I can’t even see how bad the house is because there’s so much smoke,” Underwood said.
According to the Lorain County auditor, the home, which is owned by Underwood’s mother, is worth $57,310.
Camden Township Fire Chief Adam Woodrum said the house was a total loss. Red Cross was called to assist the family.
