NORTH RIDGEVILLE — City officials are no closer than they were Monday to figuring out why residents received a false charge from Lorain Utilities after paying their bill online through the North Ridgeville portal.
The only thing they do know with certainty that it is not an issue with the city.
“It’s far beyond North Ridgeville,” said Safety Service Director Jeff Armbruster. “It was external.”
Armbruster said that police, city officials and financial institutions are continuing to investigate.
Residents who thought they were paying their North Ridgeville utilities bill found out that their accounts were not credited with their payments and the money went elsewhere. The city, Armbruster said, will not charge late fees for those instances.
In addition, those worried about having to pay a double bill shouldn’t, he said. He urged those affected to pay the current bill and to contact the Utilities Department to make arrangements to pay the past-due portion.
They also should contact their credit card companies to dispute the charge and seek reimbursement, he said.
Paul Wilson, Lorain Utilities director, said he’s gotten calls from people in other states and other cities who found similar charges on their statements. None of the money has made its way to Lorain accounts, he said.
