Dollar Tree developers eye land near Elyria police station

ELYRIA — Developers who want to build a Dollar Tree near the downtown area are eyeing city-owned land near the Elyria police station.

Monday night, City Council discussed the sale of four parcels at the corner of West Avenue and Elm Street to Level 3 Partners LLC.

Mayor Holly Brinda said the builder also purchased nearby land to increase the lot size for the project.

“The location works for what they want to do,” Brinda said.

According to Council legislation, the purchase price for the property is $35,000 plus any transfer fees.

The land is where the former Lorain County Ice Co. sat for decades. The Ice House got its start in 1929 and a few years later the West Avenue building was constructed near the old Elyria Lumber and Coal Co. on Chestnut Street. Then owner Bill Lance closed the business for good in 2007.

Years later, the city came in and demolished the dilapidated building. The land has not been developed.
