In celebration of the Elyria’s bicentennial, a historic marker will be dedicated at 11 a.m. Saturday to commemorate the city’s founding.
The dedication will be on East Bridge St. near the corner of Broad Street, followed by a program, "Spotlight on Elyria," by Lorain County Historical Society's education coordinator Janet Bird at 12:30 p.m. at the Lorain County History Center, 284 Washington Ave. Light refreshments will be served.
The day will be the city's Founders Day celebration. It marks the day when the Elyria founding party arrived near that spot on the corner of East Bridge and Broad streets between March 17 and 19, 1817. There were six people in the founding party, and they traveled to Township 6 Range 17 of the Connecticut Western Reserve, which became Elyria, from West Springfield, Mass.
