ELYRIA — In honor of National Health Center Week, which begins today, Lorain County Health and Dentistry will be hosting events to promote healthy living around the area.
More than 1,000 communities around the nation have celebrated National Health Weeks for over 30 years.
The main goal of National Health Week is to enhance the visibility and profile of community, migrant, and homeless, and public housing centers. It also aims to generate community pride and build support for the health centers program.
“We want to not only bring awareness to our services, but work with others to help the community,” said Lorain County Health and Dentistry Outreach and Volunteer Coordinator Rebecca Shaw. “We want to make sure neighbors and communities know what their resources are.”
This year, Health and Dentistry will be holding a fair with health information, activities and giveaways at Wilkes Villa in Elyria from 1 to 4 p.m. Tuesday. There will be health screenings, pharmacists from Walgreens, D.A.R.E. officers to teach drug prevention, Legal Aid consultants and Fifth-Third Bank will be providing advice for college loans.
For kids there will be many activities including, bicycling, hula hoops and tag. In the past, the event has had inflatables as well.
“You know the good, old-fashioned fun summer activities,” Shaw said.
The event is free for all to attend.
Starting Monday, there also will be a spirit week at Lorain County Health and Dentistry facilities with themes such as Mismatched Monday, Western Wednesday and Formal Friday.
“The intent behind the spirit week is to engage and bring attention, as well as starting a conversation,” Shaw said. “It opens up a way for patients to ask why we’re dressed up and then we can share with them what National Health Week is, and what it can mean to them.”
