Be the Support that New Mothers Need!

Essential nutrients and life-long disease-fighting protection are just a couple of the seemingly endless benefits of breastfeeding. The whole community benefits from having healthier mothers, babies and children when breastfeeding is supported.

Everyone plays an important role in the success of breastfeeding, including the community, employers, healthcare providers and family members. Here are some ways to support breastfeeding women in our community:

• Families can attend a breastfeeding education class with the mother-to-be to prepare to feed baby. Contact your local hospital to sign-up.

• Friends can tell new mothers how proud they are that their baby is breastfeeding and offer to assist in taking care of other tasks so that the mothers can bond and focus on their baby.

• Employers can provide lactation rooms so that employees can express milk (pump) while they are away from their baby.

• Businesses can post a “breastfeeding welcome here” sign to welcome breastfeeding mothers. Download and print a sign at no cost at KellyMom.

• Physicians and other healthcare providers can praise women for their decision to breastfeed and encourage them to seek help if they have concerns.

If you are eligible for WIC or already enrolled in the supplemental nutrition education program for women, infants, and children, call the Lorain County office at (440) 323-7320 to talk to a breastfeeding peer counselor about any questions you might have.
