Why Bother With Breakfast? It's the Most Important Meal of the Day!

Imagine you're a car. After a long night of sleeping, your fuel tank is empty. Breakfast is the fuel that gets you going so you can hit the road at full speed after going without food for 8 to 12 hours during sleep. Lorain County General Health District Health Commissioner, David Covell, R.S., MPH, encourages residents, “to be more alert, focused and ready to tackle the day’s challenges, everyone should start their day with breakfast.”

Health benefits of breakfast...

  • People who eat breakfast tend to eat healthier overall and are more likely to participate in physical activities — two great ways to help maintain a healthy weight.
  • Skipping breakfast can make us feel tired, restless, or irritable.
  • Mood and energy can drop by midmorning if we don't eat at least a small morning meal.

Tips to help you start...

  • Set a goal and plan. Look at your schedule/calendar and write in the days you will eat breakfast for the next few weeks. Two or more days a week is a good start.
  • Stock your kitchen with healthy breakfast options.
  • Prepare as much as you can the night before. Get dishes out, utensils ready, cut up fruit, etc.
  • Maybe you need to get up 10 minutes earlier.
  • Consider traditional choices, "grab and go" items such as fresh fruit, individual boxes of cereal, yogurt or smoothies, trail-mix for days when there is little or no time to eat.
  • Create a grocery list from your menu ideas. Purchase those foods to have at home when needed for greater goal success!

Here are some weird (but yummy) ideas!

  • Banana dog (peanut butter, a banana, and raisins in a long whole-grain bun)
  • Breakfast taco (shredded cheese on a tortilla, folded in half and microwaved; top with salsa)
  • Country cottage cheese (apple butter mixed with cottage cheese)
  • Fruit and cream cheese sandwich (use strawberries or other fresh fruit and whole grain bread)
  • Leftovers (they're not just for dinner anymore!)
