Walk Your Way to Better Health

Improving your health is as simple as taking one step at a time. The Lorain County General Health District Health Commissioner, Kenneth G. Pearce, supports the use of pedometers, “Pedometers are used to get started and gauge activity. Using a pedometer is a great way to set physical activity goals and measure progress.”

Move forward on the path of health by walking and take fitness goals one step at a time with a pedometer. Here is how to start walking with a pedometer:

  • Create a Baseline Number. Wear a pedometer for seven straight days during your normal daily activities and average your total for the week.
  • Determine Reasonable Goals. Try to teach your baseline average each day for another week as your first target.
  • Make Progress. Slowly increase your daily step total each week, by something as simple as 100 steps. That’s only 1 extra minute of walking!
  • Track Fitness. Keep a log of your daily step totals to monitor over time.

Need extra motivation? Start a walking group with friends, coworkers or neighbors. Walking with others can provide:

  • Enhanced Relationships
  • Support and Encouragement
  • Accountability to the Commitment
  • Even Friendly Competition!

Physical activity is one vital ingredient for preventing and managing many ailments. Be sure to use a pedometer as your partner because better health is just steps away, so start walking today!
