According to the National Cancer Institute, cervical cancer is almost always caused by human papillomavirus infection. That's especially disconcerting, as date from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey indicates that 26.8 percent of women in the United States between the ages of 14 to 59 tested positive for one or more strains of HPV. The good news is the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved two vaccines, Gardasil® and Cervarix®, that are highly effective in preventing HPV infections that cause 70 percent of all cervical cancers.
