Labrador Retrievers Most Popular Purebred Pooch

According to the American Kennel Club®, in 2009 the Labrador Retriever was once again the most popular purebred dog in the United States. That marked the 19th consecutive year Americans embraced Labs more than any other purebred dog. While that's an impressive reign, a more careful examination of AKC statistics reveals the Lab's reign could soon be coming to an end. More U.S. cities featured a breed other than the Labrador Retriever in their top spot in 2009 than in 2008. The German Shepherd, which is now the second most popular purebred dog in the U.S., is gaining ground on the Lab and is the most popular breed in several cities, including Detroit, Honolulu and Miami. Geography also apparently plays a role in popularity, as the city of Los Angeles loves no breed more than it does the English Bulldog, which is the seventh most popular purebred overall. The remaining popular pooches include:

3. Yorkshire Terrier

4. Golden Retriever

5. Beagle

6. Boxer

8. Dachshund

9. Poodle

10. Shih Tzu
