Local baseball: Crushers picked as name of Avon pro team

The Chronicle-Telegram Staff

AVON — It’s official: The name of Avon’s new baseball team is The Lake Erie Crushers.
The name, chosen by a city resident after a
six-week long “Name the Team” contest, was announced by team owner Steven Edelson on Thursday at Avon City Hall in front of residents and supporters.
“What we were trying to do is capture the area and pick something that was good for families and children,” said Edelson of the hundreds of suggestions he received on his Avon Pro Baseball company Web site, which hosted the contest.
Many residents in the area had already learned of the name, which the company had been keeping under wraps, last week after The Chronicle-Telegram sports staff discovered that the Web site domain name LakeErieCrushers.com had been purchased by Avon Pro Baseball in October.
But the lack of surprise didn’t stop the contest’s winner, Tom Long, from enjoying the spotlight.
“I don’t think it’s hit me yet,” the 46-year-old Avon resident said. “It’s amazing. It really is.”
Long said he was inspired by his 13-year-old son’s baseball team name, the North Coast Slammers.
In addition to the pride he said he’ll feel every time he passes the ballpark, Long also will receive four tickets for 13 home games, including opening day, and a hat and T-shirt with the team’s logo of a burly player crushing a baseball with his bat.
