High school hockey: EC can’t capitalize in tourney final

PARMA — Brecksville was in a giving mood Monday night.
It was too bad for Elyria Catholic that the Panthers failed to take advantage of their opponents’ generosity.
Brecksville gave EC seven power-play chances. The Panthers couldn’t score on any of them and the Bees took a 3-1 victory in the championship game of the Bruce Anderson Memorial Tournament at Reis Ice Rink.
Brecksville (3-1) scored all three goals in the first period. Elyria Catholic (3-1), a 2-1 winner over the Bees on Saturday, scored early in the second.
The Panthers failed to capitalize on a minute, 34 seconds of a 5-on-3 advantage in the second period.
“Our kids played hard,” EC coach Dave Phiel said. “I don’t think they outplayed us. We made some poor shot selections on the power plays.”
One member of the Bees who was extremely stingy Monday night was goalie Dan Miller, who turned away all but one of the Panthers’ 21 shots on goal.
“We were playing against one of the top goalies in this area of the state,” Phiel said. “We thought he had graduated by now. Nothing easy is going in against him.”
Miller was named the tournament’s most valuable player after having allowed only four goals in four games.
The Bees scored on one of three power-play opportunities.
It took Brecksville 1:03 to score as Alex Ulintz put in a goal off Alec Burgman’s assist. Burgman got the next one on a slap shot after corralling a pass from Andy Bell with 4:13 left in the first. Barely two minutes later, the Bees got a power-play goal, as Matt Iwaszkiw set up Bob Keller to make it 3-0.
“We had two turnovers in the first and they made us pay for them both times,” Phiel said. “We lost the puck twice at the blue line and it cost us both times. Our coverage wasn’t where it needed to be.”
Justin Saunders, off assists by Pat DeSouza and Cody Toboz, scored at 13:28 of the second. Andrew Field had 23 saves for EC.
“Andrew would probably like to have that third goal back,” Phiel said. “He still played a good game. Miller is a great goalie, but Andrew is, too.”
Ryan Milota and John O’Neil of Brecksville won the tournament’s best defensive player and best offensive players awards, respectively.
