Stocker Foundation awards $974,000 in grants

LORAIN — The Stocker Foundation met last week and approved 67 grants totaling $973,915 to support programs in the areas of arts and culture, community needs, education, health, social services and women’s issues. Thirty-one grants totaling $643,415 will directly benefit Northeast Ohio.
Grant awards benefiting the region include:
• Adoption Network Cleveland: $15,000 toward the Creating Futures 20th Anniversary Capital Campaign (restricted toward the establishment of a permanent endowment).
• American Red Cross Lorain County: $48,000 toward Youth First Aid & Safety Programs and toward capital improvements for the classrooms where these programs are held.
• Boy Scouts of America – Heart of Ohio Council: $5,000 in continued support of Learning for Life, an in-school character education program for low-income, at-risk youth throughout Lorain County.
• Boys & Girls Clubs of Lorain County: $50,000 toward the implementation of Family Plus Support Program, designed to benefit club members and caregivers by promoting family stability, cohesion and connection.
• City of Lorain: $15,000 toward community engagement and education activities that will help inform and guide a citywide strategic planning effort in 2009.
• Cleveland Reads: $10,000 toward the continuation of an after-school tutoring program that pairs high school-aged Big Brothers and Big Sisters with at-risk children in grades kindergarten through fifth grade in Elyria, Sheffield-Sheffield Lake and Lorain schools.
• Direct Action for Central Lorain: $30,000 toward general operating expenses that will be used to defray the costs of programming and services the organization provides to the residents of central Lorain.
• El Centro de Servicios Sociales: $25,000 toward youth leadership and employment programming that will benefit at-risk youth ages 12 to 17 and Spanish-speaking adults.
• Gordon Square Arts District: $15,000 toward a multiyear five-project capital campaign collaborative between Cleveland Public Theatre, Near West Theatre and Detroit Shoreway Community Development Organization.
• Great Lakes Theater Festival: $12,500 continued support of arts in education-based residencies at public middle and high schools throughout Lorain County.
• Harrison Cultural Community Centre: $10,000 toward the implementation of the Afterschool Program, designed to serve low-income children and youth ages 5 to 12.
• Ideastream: $13,915 continued support of “Reading Rainbow,” a television program that encourages young children to read books and visit their local libraries.
• Lakewood Foundation: $10,000 toward H2O (Help to Others), a year-round service learning program for middle and high school students.
• Linking Employment, Abilities & Potential (LEAP): $20,000 toward the Low-Vision Program, which aims to provide low-vision older adults maximum independence and safety in the home and community via technology and other adaptive skills.
• Little Lighthouse Learning Center: $25,000 toward expenses related to relocating into a permanent facility, allowing the organization to maintain high-quality services to children and families.
• Lorain County Domestic Relations Court: $20,000 toward the Lorain County Public School Attendance Program, designed to reduce truancy among elementary school students.
• Lorain County Free Clinic: $45,000 continued support of the Prescription Drug Program and toward general operating funds, allowing the organization to continue serving low-income uninsured adults ages 19 to 65.
• Lorain County Health & Dentistry: $45,000 toward dental services for low-income, uninsured adults.
• Lucy Idol Center: $35,000 toward a New Day Habilitation Classroom that will serve mentally, physically, and developmentally handicapped adults ages 20 to 60 from throughout Lorain County.
• Neighborhood House Association of Lorain County: $40,000 toward general operating support that will allow the organization to expand services to homeless men, women, and children in Lorain and deliver programming to low-income families with children in south Elyria.
• Ohio Dance Theatre: $16,000 toward direct-service expenses related to providing educational outreach to children and youth throughout Lorain County.
• Opera Cleveland: $10,000 toward the continuation of “Music! Words! Opera!,” a program that leads students through a study of traditional opera and the creation of an original operatic work.
• Planned Parenthood of Northeast Ohio: $20,000 toward Triple T (Teens Talking to Teens), a yearlong youth development program that educates teens about responsible choices and healthy lifestyles.
• Salvation Army Lorain: $20,000 toward the purchase of food for the organization’s emergency Food Pantry program.
• Save our Children of Elyria: $30,000 toward youth programming including the purchase of a replacement van to transport youth.
• Scholastic Games: $1,500 continued support of an annual radio quiz show that promotes teams of high school students with academic ability.
• Town Hall of Cleveland: $1,500 continued support of Lorain County’s high school students in this annual lecture series and toward in-school distance learning opportunities.
• Voices for Children: $15,000 toward community awareness and outreach programming (Rally for Kids) during 2009 benefiting abused and neglected children in the court system.
• West Side Catholic Center: $15,000 toward Rise to End Homelessness, a program that aids homeless women and children in their transition from shelter living into permanent housing.
• Young Audiences of Northeast Ohio: $15,000 toward the continuation of an elementary-based literacy-focused arts program to benefit elementary school students in Lorain.
• Zion Community Development Corp.: $10,000 toward general operating expenses related to coordinating and mobilizing affordable housing, economic empowerment, and education enrichment resources for the benefit of low-income residents of the southeast quadrant of Oberlin.
