Wellington Chamber names Bright Star
Alice Harrison, a member of the Wellington Area Chamber of Commerce, was recognized Oct. 30 as a Bright Star for 2008 by the Northern Ohio Area Chambers of Commerce at Pickwick and Frolic’s Hilarities Fourth Street Theatre in Cleveland.
She is a member of the Lions Club, the Wellington Chamber of Commerce and Kiwanis, and she was a Chamber representative to Main Street Wellington. She is a member of the Brighton Methodist Church, where she has been the organist and pianist for more than 50 years.
She is also on the 4-H Endowment Committee.
The chambers nominated a person to be recognized as their “Bright Star,” who has “made a significant impact on the chamber through membership, retention, sponsorship, economic development, operations and/or education.”
The Stars received their plaques from Mark Nolan, WKYC-TV 3’s anchorman.
Teacher donates hair for Wigs for Kids
Lorain County Joint Vocational School English teacher Sandy Walker was inspired when senior cosmetology students said they were raising money for Wigs for Kids.
Besides Walker’s hair donation, the two senior cosmetology classes had a penny war and raised $154 for the cause.
“This was a great opportunity for me to help motivate my students to reach out to others,” said Walker, of Wellington. “I also got a great new haircut in the process.”
Cosmetology student Deemyi Scott of Amherst won the honor of cutting of Walker’s 11-inch ponytail and giving her a new stacked bob hairstyle.
Deemyi was selected because she had the highest combined grade point average in her English and cosmetology classes.
Wigs for Kids is a national nonprofit organization that provides individual hair pieces, at no cost, to children who need them.
