Girl Scouts learn to work together at camp

Special to The Chronicle

RICHFIELD — Problem-solving and working together are two skills that Girl Scout Troop 179 tackled during a recent camping trip.

Whether it was playing hide-and-seek at midnight or finding “stolen” luggage during the two-night trip, Troop 179 learned that if its members worked together, they could accomplish anything.

“Working with others taught me how to be more confident,” said Angelea Frankina, 13, of Elyria.

“If you don’t learn how to work with others now, then in the future, if you are stuck in a situation where you have to work with others, you won’t know what to do,” said Brittanie Strickland, 13, of Elyria.

One of the biggest tests of the girls’ skills was a scavenger hunt in which items to build a boat were hidden throughout Camp Hilaka.

“We had to work together and use our skills like trusting each other and how to successfully lead our group,” said Taylor Nau, 11, of Lorain.

“When we got that done, we saw that we actually really worked well together,” said Maysel Sweeten, 11, of Lorain. “We were happy, proud and excited.”

Even the girls who got lost during the scavenger hunt had a lesson to share.

“We have to learn north, south, east and west — cardinal directions — better,” said Jackie Palella, 10, of Elyria.

There was also plenty of time for singing around the campfire, freezing each others’ underwear and scaring troop leaders. The girls, ages 8 to 14, painted fingernails, wrapped their hair in colorful yarn and designed blue jeans, showing off their artistic side.

“My pants would show that I like Girl Scouts,” said Harlee Phillips, 10, of Elyria. “Some pants describe what our Girl Scout leaders have taught us.”

For the troop members who didn’t attend the event, hearing about it made them want to mark their calendars for the next camping trip.

“I’m excited because I get to go to the next one. I heard all about the trip and I’m glad that the girls got to go,” said Madelyne Miller, 11, of Lorain.

Troop 179’s next camping trip is Oct. 24-26. They will be going to Camp Singing River in Huron County.

Girl Scout Troop 179 co-authored this article with the help of staff writer Lisa Roberson, who is helping the troop — which includes girls from Elyria, Lorain, Grafton and North Ridgeville and meets at Elyria Wesleyan Village — earn a writing badge.  Troop members are Mya Taylor, Madalyne Miller, Jamie Janda, Karina Hilwig, Maysel Sweeten, Brooke Bauer, Taylor Nau, Angelea Frankina, Lynnea Fondale, Caitlynn Hamilton, Madison Hamilton, Serena Hamilton, Harlee Phillips, Brittanie Strickland, Alyssa Melendez, Jackie Palella, Brooke Klun and Brookelynn Strickland. Troop leaders are Catherine Bauer and Tracy Strickland.
