Eaton Township trustees restore public comment

Cindy Leise | The Chronicle-Telegram

EATON TWP. — Township trustee chairman Douglas Edwards opened the floor to public comment again at Tuesday night’s meeting after he silenced public comment on Sept. 2.

Residents wasted no time in asking questions, although they were limited to three minutes apiece.

Donna Hicks asked about the status of an investigation of the township’s fire department and emergency medical service by an outside consultant that began in November 2007.

Edwards said trustees planned to meet with the consultant next week at the investigator’s request.

“We don’t know what the investigator will ask,” Edwards said.

Last month, the township released public documents to The Chronicle-Telegram that are under investigation including a report on a woman who died, but most of the report was blacked out.

Nearly 20 people patiently waited for nearly 21/2 hours for the chance to speak on topics including sewer and development.

Manus Patton asked why Edwards suspended public comment in the first place.

Edward replied, “One of the things is respect — respect from the public and respect from trustees. My goal is to develop that.”

Trustee Linda Morrison said she was happy the restriction had been lifted.

”They have a right to be heard,” she said.

Resident Marjorie Rush said she hadn’t been to a trustee meeting and is glad she went.

“I was educated and entertained — the no-speak edict motivated me deeply.”
